Presents a talk by

Dr. Małgorzta Kołaczek

West vs. East.

European Minorities and the Refugee Crises

Thursday, November 16, 2017

12.30pm

Buchanan Tower 997

Abstract:

In recent years, a primary focus of public opinion in Europe has been on the so-called refugee crisis; however, the nature of this debate along with its impact on minorities has differed in Western and Central Europe as compared to Eastern and Southern Europe. This lecture will analyze how the unprecedented “migrant crisis” has influenced the situations of minority groups in Western, Central and Eastern Europe with an emphasis on social attitudes toward the Roma community in Poland. It will also discuss the previous migrations of Roma people into Western Europe, the impact this had on policies toward them, as well as analogies to current discussions about migrants.

Bio:

Dr. Małgorzata Kołaczek is an assistant professor at the Institute of Intercultural Studies at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland, and is currently a visiting professor at the University of Rochester, US. For the past fifteen years, she has researched the Roma community with a special interest in their ethnic mobilization, their leaders’ activities, Roma NGOs, and the socio-political situation of Roma people in Central and Eastern Europe. She is co-founder of the Dialog-Pheniben Foundation (since 2012) and was managing editor of its socio-cultural quarterly, Dialog-Pheniben, (2009-2016). She is an alumna of the prestigious US Department of State Program – International Visitors Leadership Program (2011, Minority Outreach Program).

The event is co sponsored by UBC Departments of CENES, FHIS and History, and by the Polish Consulate General in Vancouver.
