European Minorities and the Refugee Crises
Thursday, November 16, 2017
12.30pm
Buchanan Tower 997

Abstract:
In recent years, a primary focus of public opinion in Europe has been on the so-called refugee crisis; however, the nature of this debate along with its impact on minorities has differed in Western and Central Europe as compared to Eastern and Southern Europe. This lecture will analyze how the unprecedented “migrant crisis” has influenced the situations of minority groups in Western, Central and Eastern Europe with an emphasis on social attitudes toward the Roma community in Poland. It will also discuss the previous migrations of Roma people into Western Europe, the impact this had on policies toward them, as well as analogies to current discussions about migrants.
