I teach at a community college, so transportation, work conflicts, family life, etc. are frequently issues for our students and often impacts attendance. Understanding this, I drop the lowest RAT at the end of the semester. If you miss a RAT, for any reason (I don't even need to know why, life happens and I don't want to be in the position to judge a student's struggles), the student receives a zero. That zero will be dropped at the end of the semester. If they miss 2 or more RATs (there are 6) then they must face the consequence of repeatedly missing classes and the other zeros are calculated into their grade. A student must take the iRAT to get credit for tRAT (tardy students miss out), and they must be present for the tRAT to receive credit (keeps them from skipping out after the iRAT).
As for team evaluations--my students receive points for submitting a midterm evaluation for their team members, they then can receive points for submitting a reflection on the feedback from their team, they receive points for submitting the final team evaluation and then the points awarded from their team members for their participation in the group (this is weighted the most). Completing these evaluations and the reflection are assignments and they will receive zeros for not doing them.

Interesting discussion on attendance and consequences in students grades. We have a similar issue, some of our students do not fill out the peer feedback forms for their team members. They do receive their own feedback scores so those points are awarded to them. Does anybody have a solution for how to keep students accountable for the peer feedback?

Love to hear your thoughts on this matter

I also do as you do, David, in terms of team grades. Team scores are team scores and I use the peer evaluation to weight the contribution of the team work for individuals’ final grades. This is so important in making the students accountable to the team. If we adjust team grades for individuals, it takes away from the team’s influence over themselves and reduces individual accountability to the team.

Jim,

I also drop the lowest iRAT score; that takes care of about 90% of the iRAT absences. If the student has a good excuse for any additional iRAT absences, I will drop the excused iRAT absence from the calculation and they get the score on the iRATs that they actually completed (minus the low score.) Students always get the tRAT score. If the team feels that the person did not pull his or her weight because the student missed one or more tRATs, the team can take that into consideration in the peer review. This makes the students more accountable to the team -- which is what we generally want.

Dear Jim

In my introductory classes I have some extra credit options that can augment I-RAT loss. For t-RATs I typically drop the lowest score and that covers most issues. In the syllabus, it states that if folks don't sign the t-rat and application sheets they do not receive a grade. If folks are only in attendance for 50% of the application they can only get up to 50% of the grade for that application.

Hello all,

I need some advice on how to handle grading when a student misses a tRAT. In my TBL class, grades are given for the iRAT, and each student is given the tRAT score. I had two students miss tRATs. One student missed the tRAT because she thought the class was an hour later. The other student missed the tRAT due to illness (verified).

My initial decision was to give the tRAT score to the ill student and a 0 to the late student. We, the faculty, are discussing how to make a clear, fair policy for when a student misses the tRAT. There are several permutations of this scenario that could make it grayer than we would like. What is your opinion?

Thank you,

Jim
