Hi,
First, I agree with Mary McCord. How you deal with this situation will ultimately depend on the student's motivation for clarification.
I would take some time to remind the student that they may do poorly on one or two iRATs. This is a new skill (i.e. reading the info and then taking the test on that material before being lectured on it/applying it) and they may need to practice the process before they can excel on these types of tests. Furthermore, you are using this type of teaching to allow students to "get it" as they go through the unit. It is okay if they don't have everything figured out on the iRAT. Right?

It seems like this student is having difficulty learning the material on their own or doesn't understand the faculty expectations. The student might benefit from academic support services, but I would meet with them one-on-one first to talk about how how they are approaching the course. It's important that students know their faculty are there to help when they need it.

Regards,

Chris Burns

This student sounds as if they are either overly nervous and trying to find anything that may help, or has an axe to grind...both of which are not productive. If they have a content issue or concept they would like to discuss, I would leave it at that level, and refuse to go over the whole exam.
