Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has used TBL in a remedial math course and/or used the Hawkes Learning System for IRATs.

Thank you,
Liza

It is interesting to hear how people do things. At Bradford for our Pharmacy course we bought into Turning Technologies "turning point" software and clickers.
As well as the advantage of instant feedback on iRAT scores/issues (helpful for planning the mini lecture), we've found the ability of the software to create multiple versions of the iRAT paper (with randomised question order & randomised answer/distracter order) equally useful. It has helped to minimise iRAT cheating in these large groups. We're then using IF-AT scratch cards for the team RAT.
Given our numbers (200 approx per class), something scalable was essential. So far it has worked well, though we've had a few intermittent technical hitches. I would say it's not a cheap solution, but worth investigating.

Hi everybody,
We use moodle quizzes routinely for our iRATs and tRATs, now in our second course with full TBL implementation.
Moodle requirements need to be addressed when many concurrent users. We also had some difficulties initially (network wifi routers capacity, but mainly resources at the moodle server). Server processor shall be sized accordingly, but the most important factor seems to be the memory amount, related to concurrent users. Of course, moodle database server should be in a differente physical computer, and concurrent connections allocations to DB sized also according to the amount of users. All these parameters are discussed extensively in moodle.org<http://moodle.org>.
We’re having around 100 concurrent users for moodle quizzes every Tuesday now, and finally got it running smoothly. With moodle quizzes you can also use the “adaptive” mode, which, to a certain level, mimics IF-AT behavior…
The most important advantage for us is that we can monitor the progress of the iRAT in real time, and have a detailed report immediately after the quiz is closed, so when students are developing their tRAT, we can quickly see what questions have been more difficult to solve for them, and then we address those topics in the mini-lecture, if any.
At the same time, the grading is automatic, so the required resources to administer it are much lower… something that can be critical, mostly due to the increased amount of graded items one needs to address when using TBL…
Best regard,
Ernesto

Hi Amy,

I have experimented with the quiz function in Moodle and it works not too badly as long as the class is not too large. The limiting issue seems to be the number of simultaneous users who are able to access the wireless router. Our WiFi routers were installed a few years ago with no idea that they might be used for in-class online testing (RATs). At around 40 students, anywhere from 1-3 students would be randomly kicked off the internet in the middle of their RAT. So needless to say I will not be going that route until we upgrade the carrying capacity of our wireless routers.

When it did work, it was fantastic! I got immediate results showing how many choose the correct answer and where there were common incorrect choices on the iRAT.

Cheers

Neil

Since our curriculum is fully electronic we started our TBL experience with a digital version from the start. It is time sensitive for start and stop and distributed as a link to students the day before. I get the class results in whatever format I wish about 5 minutes into the GRAT session so I can tell where some of the issues are if any.

Subject: Quick Key for scanning RAT's

Hello everyone. I have been looking for an app that will scan RATs in the classroom rather than buying a scanner. This one is currently a Kickstarter campaign but if it is successful it should be ready for the fall semester: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/quickkey/quick-key-the-smartphone-app-that-works-for-teache
