I typically give online lectures rather than readings, but I agree in principle with Jim…I pared down my lectures to the "juiciest" parts to put them into more manageable sizes for the students and that seems to help them focus on the most important things. I will typically take some of the material I delete and move it into the discussion during application or RAT. Seems the same thing would be true for readings.

Hi

I don't have hard numbers…but do know it is more in medicine then in some other disciplines

In engineering we assign 30-40 pages for two week modules….we started TBL (10 years ago) with assigning 70-80 pages….but it seemed student devoted a fixed amount of time to reading and just stopped where ever they were….now with fewer pages….they will actually seem to want to understand them and will drop into office hours to ask questions

I have heard numbers like 80-100 pages is OK in med school

Bottom line….I would encourage to make the reads as pithy, short and focused as possible….you can assign lots of pages but give students a detailed reading guide that provides specific directions on what to pay attention to…and what to skip….lets us have bigger total page counts….with smaller focused student effort

Subject: Reading assignment

Hello members,
I am looking for suggestions on what would be considered a "reasonable" number
of pages (reading material) per hour of class meeting in the area of medicine.
Thank you!!
