Michele Clark and I ran a workshop at the recent TBLC annual conference on: “Getting Student Buy-in and Engagement with TBL or Flipped Classes” that is designed to introduced students to the key requirements for TBL (pre-learning and teamwork).

I use SQ3R too in live study skills workshops, although this is mainly used for getting students up to speed on basic study skills in reading. I’d do a quick google search using the phrase: TBL test preparation medicine MCQ

Presently taking the Harvard HBX CORe program (as a student) and working through many MCQ question types I am still pondering the exact same issue. How do you prepare students for these types of tests. Basic study skills seem the best option as one has to be able to study in depth to “beat the quiz”. I personally don’t believe I am good at this yet.



In relation to TBL for business study skills our full Online “Learning Guide” aka self-paced study skills tutorial (for online and face to face postgraduate MBA business students) is freely available as a Moodle course backup that is open licensed under Creative Commons. I can also parse out sections to various formats if interested.

Our Learning Center offers a 50 minute workshop on how to read textbooks. The instructor uses the SQ3R method. He had provided me with handouts, which I share with students during the first week, but I encourage them to attend the workshop. He also will schedule a special workshop for my TBL students, usually some time between the first a second RAT. Students are more likely to attend after the first RAT when they realize that they were not as prepared as they thought.

I was wondering if anyone has ever done a session or workshop teaching students how to prepare for TBL tests.

I work on a foundation programme for indigenous and minority students and some of them are struggling with how to prepare, for example,  how much time to spend studying, how to study for MCQs in general.

Does anyone have any practical tips or activities that they have done to get students to practice the skillset required to do TBL well? We will be holding a workshop to help with this preparation and any help would be very appreciated,
