Hi all,
I was convinced to give TBL a try by a former graduate student this past November. So, I am not designing my Juvenile Delinquency course to fit this structure.
What I am currently struggling with are two things. First, I have never used a standard text book in this class. Instead, I have a number of readings that examine the institutional risk and protective factors for juvenile delinquency (broken down into four major groups of Communities / Culture, School, Families, and Peers). These readings are not typically complete in terms of having all the relevant material students need to understand the basics of the material. Normally, I used the readings later in the week after I had introduced material and they could then see the ideas within the readings. So, I am not sure exactly how to shift this around so that the readings are used as the basic start instead of lectures. I guess I would love some suggestions for readings or an alternative way of doing this that fits the TBL structure.
Second, I am struggling to come up with good application exercises. I have read everything I can find on the web and three books about the approach. However, I have found very few actual examples. My former student has sent me her examples but since these were in higher level classes, or intro, I am still searching for a few more suggestions.
So, if you have used TBL in a class like Juvenile Delinquency, or related topics, I would be grateful for some suggestions and hints.
Thanks and Happy new year!
