This is the policy we came up with for dealing with missed RATs (see
below). We run two TBL sessions for 2 hours on Friday afternoons (so
missed sessions without a valid reason become more of an issue if it
happens to be a long weekend!). A valid, documented medical excuse would
require an official note from the University health Clinic that is then
submitted to the Dean of Students office, who then notify us if a student
is exempted.

Just to give you some background: each TBL Module is 2 weeks in length
(i.e., 2 consecutive Friday sessions). This is part of the Medical
Microbiology course for 2nd Year Medical students. Each session has about
250 students (approximately 42 teams of 6 students in each session), with a
total of slightly over 500 students.

The IRAT and TRAT each contribute 9 points (so 18 points total) to the
final grade, which is out of a total of 260 points..

Regards,

Joanna

Attendance will be taken by your Team for each TBL session. If you miss a
session where there was a Readiness Assessment Test, you will be allowed to
take a Completion test ONLY if you have a valid, documented medical excuse.
Illegitimate/undocumented absences will result in a score of 0 for both the
Individual and Team Readiness Assessment Tests.

Completion IRATs will be scheduled by the TBL Coordinator and will normally
be held on the Friday, at 12 noon, following the original IRAT. Since you
were not present for one out of the two Team sessions, you will receive
half (50%) of the TRAT score for the missed module. In the event that you
are absent for both the IRAT session and the following week’s session
(i.e., a whole Module), you will not be eligible for any of the TRAT points
associated with that Module.
