Good Afternoon, TBL colleagues,
Last year, two of us longtime TBL users (Bill Roberson and Tine Reimers) from the teaching center at SUNY-Albany (now led by TBL'er Billie Franchini), moved to British Columbia to take positions at Vancouver Island University, in the Centre for Innovation and Excellence in Learning<https://ciel.viu.ca/>. Since our arrival, we've been busy setting up a new TBL support operation, the Vancouver Island Team-Based Learning Institute, mirroring the TBL Academy we helped develop at UAlbany beginning back in 2008.

We are pleased to announce that, as of this past September, our first cohort of 15 new TBL adopters, all faculty members here at VIU, successfully launched their first TBL courses.

For our upcoming December (9 & 11) offering of the Vancouver Island TBL Institute we are holding a few seats open for non-VIU guests. If you know of colleagues looking for this kind of opportunity, we invite you to share with them this information.

The price of the program is modestly set for "cost-recovery" only, and there is the added bonus of guest participants having a legitimate pretext to travel to "The Island," one of the most picturesque regions of North America, with a surprising, year-round mild climate. We'd recommend that participants plan to bring their hiking boots, camera and binoculars, and spend a few extra days here (Yes, even in December!) to take advantage of so much beauty<http://www.vancouverisland.travel/regions/>.

An overview of the TBL Institute can be seen below in the promotional blurb we use for this program to recruit new TBL adopters at the VIU campus; more details of the agenda can be found on the application page: https://survey.viu.ca/Guest_2015_TBL.survey.

Let me know if you have questions.

Vancouver Island TBL Institute
Transform Your Classroom with Team-Based Learning
December 9 and 11, 2015 in Nanaimo, BC, Canada<http://www.hellobc.com/nanaimo.aspx>

The evidence is growing worldwide in support of the Michaelsen-Knight-Fink Model of Team-Based Learning (2004). TBL is a teaching strategy that clears a path toward greater student independence, self-awareness, and personal responsibility for learning. It works in any discipline, with any content; with beginning students as well as advanced students; in large classes as well as small classes. The key? A coherent set of learnable teaching protocols that ensure alignment of cognitive and social forces for increased student motivation, applied learning and critical thinking. TBL is now broadly in use at institutions of higher learning on several continents, with measurement data consistently showing high gains in student achievement and low rates of attrition.

Fifteen of our own VIU colleagues recently took the plunge to adopt TBL, and many of them report that they are already experiencing increased classroom energy and greater student investment in their own learning. Their ongoing TBL experiments at VIU are happening in fields as diverse as Writing, Math, Art and Design, History, Resource Management, Geology, Electrical, Hospitality, Recreation and Tourism, Marketing, Management and Experiential Learning.

The VIU Centre for Innovation and Excellence in Learning is now sponsoring a new cohort of TBL adopters for implementation beginning in the Spring 2016 semester. The Institute will take place on December 9th and 11th with independent work required on the 10th of December. The Vancouver Island TBL Institute is designed to take you through the process of transforming a traditionally taught course into a TBL course. This event is geared for instructors who will implement the TBL approach beginning in January 2016.

For more information about TBL, please visit the TBL Collaborative<http://www.teambasedlearning.org> or peruse LearnTBL<http://learntbl.ca/what-is-tbl/>, the collection of resources provided by Jim Sibley at UBC.

Dates: December 9 and 11, 2015, 8:30 AM - 3:30 PM, plus pre-institute readings and a substantial course development assignment between meeting days of the Institute. To apply, please provide us with your information at https://survey.viu.ca/Guest_2015_TBL.survey.
