Bill,

I teach airline management, airport administration and finance and TBL works extremely well. Some of my applications:

FOR AIRLINE MANAGEMENT

Which aircraft will you operate on the Sydney to Canberra route

a) ATR 72 turbo prop

b) E 170 regional jet

c) A320

b) B737

FOR MANGEMENT ACCOUNTING

Take the landing traffic data from the San Juan airport. The total aeronautical charges are $68 million.

1. Allocate the landing charges to the different airlines

a) What was the charge for American Airlines?

b) What was the charge for Cape Air?

2. Describe your allocation methodology

FOR AIRPORT ADMINISTRATION (good way to use current events)

You are the operations manager at O'Hare airport. You see a video on Twitter of a passenger being dragged of a United flight by your security team.

1. Rank order the first three things you would do in the next hour

2. Rank order the next three things you would do in the following 24 hours

3. Rank order the top three things you would do over the next week

FOR FINANCE / M&A (scenario is a potential acquisition transaction; I did this as a guest lecture today in a "hackathon" format in an M&A class based on my prior experience as a CFO; can easily be adapted to many M&A deals, situations and cases that faculty have access to).

1. Rank the top three reasons to do the deal

2. Rank the top three reasons not to do the deal

3. Should you do the acquisition?

a) Strongly yes

b) Somewhat yes

c) Neutral

d) Somewhat no

d) Strongly no

4. Value the target

5. Value the acquirer

6. What is the best deal structure?

a) All equity

b) 75% equity / 25% cash

c) 50/50 mix

d) 25% equity / 75% cash

e) All cash

7. Rank the top three items to include in your offer / bid letter.

8. Rank the top three items to address in due diligence.

Kind regards,

Brian

Subject: Application Examples for a Business School?

I'll be giving a talk at a business school and one focus is TBL. It would be great to have several examples of application exercises that could be used there. Thus, might anyone have an accounting, finance, marketing, or management example or two that they might share?

Thanks!
