I have the same response. If not there, no points for anything. I also allow them to drop their lowest RAT (both team and individual). We have also come to a compromise with RAT's since they were seriously struggling. They can use notes for the I-RAT (NOTES only - no actual readings). I figure if they do the work to make good notes, they can use them. Been only one of those so far but significant improvement in individual scores and people happier (average from around 3/10 to 7/10)

I'm new to TBL as well and am very surprised that some class policies allow students to receive scores for work they didn't do/learning they didn't demonstrate. Can anyone share the theory/purpose behind such a policy?
In my class, students do not receive scores if they are not present, but students can drop their lowest iRAT/tRAT scores from the final (so, if they missed one, they can drop those 0s). This has worked well for me (albeit, only taught using TBL twice)---no complaints.

Donna - our course policy which seems to work well - if the absence is "excused" (e.g., contacting the faculty member for the planned absence {illness, car trouble} prior to the class), the IRAT score is the class mean, and the same GRAT score as the groupŠif not excused, then zero for IRAT and GRAT Ed
