To get around the they just have to match with another student problem, I cycle through the four forms you get in a bundle. That way they never know what is coming next. So, for the first quiz they get 1-10 on the first form, then 11-20 on the possibly the third form, then 40-50 from another form.

Subject: Re: A proposed solution for IFAT cards

Thanks, all.

I know there's no such thing as a perfectly cheat-proof system, but academic dishonesty is common enough where I teach that I try to avoid at least the biggest holes in my exam security.

I consider a hole too big if there's a pretty simple and sure-fire way of cheating the system. If I can think of an easy break-in after less than a minute thinking of it from the students' perspective, I look for something else. Call me paranoid, but...

Anything that allows students to use electronics during an exam is automatically out. If they can use their phones or computers, they can just post the prompt in the private GroupMe for the course that generally exists behind the scenes. This doesn't just let all the students in the room collaborate, but it makes it possible for students from previous courses to join and help all your current students answer the questions, perhaps for a fee. I'm not comfortable with that!

Buying a 50-question IFAT and using just ten at a time is an interesting idea, but all a student needs to do is look at the form after the first TRAT and see whether they know of anyone who took a test with the same pattern for the first ten, in some other course. If so, then bingo -- they can confidently walk into the next four RATs with a perfect knowledge of all the answers before they've even seen the questions!

I know that others don't seem to be bothered by these things, but there's no accounting for taste, I guess.

I would be interested in having the TBLC become a reseller of smaller batches of IFAT cards, but I'm not a member. Perhaps someone else might give them a nudge? I'd be grateful!

Best,
Justin

Hi, Mark. I have exactly the same problem, and am just now contemplating what to do.

The problem is in fact twofold, as I see it.

First, even the smallest bundles they sell -- packs of a thousand cards -- is way too many for most of us. It would take me several years to use up an entire pack. Even if you do six or seven TRATs in a single course, you will have that many students on each team, so you won't use up all the cards in a pack until you've taught a thousand students. For most people in my department, that would take several years.

A second problem is that each pack seems to have only four different answer keys (that is, sequences of correct answers) -- 250 of each type. Presumably, there are many more answer keys than that: back when Epstein was selling them, I think there were sixteen or so types. But there are serious security risks when you have to repeat the pattern ever fourth time you use the cards for several years. All it takes is for one or two students to post the answer keys they get on some secret GroupMe, and they will quickly figure out that it's just the same four over and over again. They memorize those four sequences, or write them down somewhere handy, and they can just use one or two easy questions on your test to figure out the entire answer key. That should be a huge red flag.

My suggestion: we use this list to trade forms. First, some of us could buy these expensive and way-too-big packs, and then offer to break them up and send smaller packets to others here who want them. I could happily make do with just a hundred cards rather than a thousand for a year or two, and I'd rather pay $30 for a hundred than $290 for a thousand.

Second, we could strengthen security by indicating which answer keys we've received and which ones we want. If you buy 100 cards each from three different people who each have four distinct answer keys, you can get 300 cards with 12 different answer keys for under a hundred dollars, rather than three times that many for three times the cost and just one third the security.

Anyone interested? I'm mostly interested in the 10-answer cards with five options per question.

I appreciate Cognalearn selling the IFATs. Unfortunately, they sell them only in blocks of 1000. Since few people at my university use them, it isn’t a practical option for me. I only use 20 or so each semester.

I know there are technology-based solutions, including Intedashboard (which is a good tool). I personally prefer the cards, however, and hope Cognalearn considers smaller lots or another solution becomes available.

Good morning,

I'm sending this out to everyone hoping for some information.

I have been using the Epstein IF-AT scratch off cards for a number of years and love using them in my teaching. But now that Epstein is out of business, I'm wondering how others who have been using these are doing equivalent forms of assessment.

Is there another similar form that is available? I would love to have information for a new source for these as I had intended to continue using these in my teaching.

Thank you in advance,
