Hi Jim,

Zoom now has a native Whiteboard you can use and save (new feature). I have not used it with a class, only tested it with a couple of colleagues, but it works and has a few templates if you choose to use these. It might be worth looking at it or asking if anyone here tried it yet.

I use Jamboard too. A few things to note

  1. You need to set the permissions so students can edit. In theory this means that anyone on the web can edit your jamboards but I have never had problems with ‘jam bombing’ (and you can lock the boards for editing afters the session).
  2. In the simple case, you give each team a page on the same Jamboard – which means they can see each others work (I don’t have a problem with this for formative exercises, although my feeling is they rarely actually do this) and in theory can ‘vandalise’ each others work in progress (my students, and I would imagine yours too, are mature enough not to do this. Might be more of an issue at high school level). You can give each team a different Jamboard, but this adds complexity so I don’t do this.
  3. Jamboard editing is quite limited – great for post-its, less good for creating a mind map/concept map or flowchart. I would think something like Miro might be better for that, although in Miro (or padlet) there is just one big page unless you give each team their own Miro/padlet (which again adds complexity).
  4. I am not sure about the global accessibility of Jamboard (eg in China). Although I have quite a few Chinese students and they seem to have accessed it OK. Still, worth bearing in mind.

You don't often get email from [log in to unmask]. Learn why this is important

Liz and Judith,

Thank you.  This is just the type of advice I needed.  Brian Griffith, Suzanne Goh and Caroline Wilson also have sent helpful advice.  I'm excited because the whiteboard richly documents team applications activity with possibilities for faculty feedback, post-session.  It also seems to be a nifty skill for students entering their (online) careers, post-pandemic.

Hi, Jim,

I use Jamboard as well.  I also used Padlet for the first time last spring.  I taught Written and Oral Communication in the spring and will teach Text and Meaning in the fall.  Both are courses in the Humanities department, online in Ghana while I am at home in Montreal.

I am collecting data on engagement, accountability, satisfaction, teamwork and analytical skills for another study but have not yet started the analysis.

Regards,

Judith

Hi Jim,

I use Google Jamboard fairly often in different workforce arenas (health and human services and athletics).  It has some limitations, but is fairly friendly.

Thanks to Caroline Wilson introducing me to it!

I do not have participant data regarding satisfaction, but am happy to talk about the experience of using it as a consultant and trainer.

Best,

Liz

Hello,

We're developing an immunology TBL that will include a concept mapping application.  We would like to consider student satisfaction (or other data) that is informative about students' experience with interactive whiteboards in online TBL sessions.  Our current TBL sessions are online with Intedashboard, but any experience related to online whiteboard implementation would be appreciated.
