Hi John,

I typically work with teams of four, which has worked well in clinical social work education and we also typically use teams of 4 in child welfare workforce training here in Pennsylvania. Four learners bring enough resource to address assignments and there seems to be more even participation by team members. Anecdotally, I am hearing that many instructors are using smaller (4 or 5 person) teams in online learning settings.

I have found that 3 tends to be more problematic. Two teams of 4 works well in TBL using typical facilitation techniques. Even a single team has been used, drawing on answers and arguments made by previous learners in the course. Disclaimer – I have not done this myself.

Best,
Liz

Subject: TBL in really small classes

Hi everyone,

I just found out that my fall term course that usually has ~25 students, may only have ~10. Does anyone know of a resource that presents best practices for using TBL in really small courses? Or has anyone used TBL in really small courses? If so, I'd love to pick your brain for tips...

Cheers,
John
