Good afternoon, TBL Colleagues,

Please forward this announcement to any instructors you know who might be looking for a “boot camp” style opportunity to learn Team-Based Learning, in time for the Fall 2017 semester.

We are now gearing up for the next offering of the Vancouver Island Team-Based Learning Institute. This is one of the “three sisters” of the TBL Institute: we began this effort to promote the use of TBL about 10 years ago at SUNY Albany, where project co-founder Billie Franchini still presides. In 2015 we launched a parallel program at Vancouver Island University. Earlier this month, we were pleased to welcome the newest iteration of the Institute, hosted by Jim Sibley at University of British Columbia.

The goal in every case is the same: create a highly experiential process that allows participants to understand TBL from the inside out—by following the format that students will use. By the end of the Institute participants will not only be deeply familiar with the design process, but will also be well on their way to applying it to an upcoming course. Along the way, they will meet, learn from, and make friends with a variety of colleagues in higher education.

It is a common practice of past participants in the VI TBL Institute to schedule a few days of relaxation on Vancouver Island, either before or after the Institute. If you are fond of outdoor activities, water sports, fishing, hiking, wine-tasting and natural beauty, you will not be disappointed.

Transform Your Classroom with Team-Based Learning

The evidence is piling up in support of the Michaelsen approach to Team-Based Learning. Team-Based Learning is a teaching strategy that lays a clear path toward greater student independence and personal responsibility for learning. In any discipline and with any content. The key? A simple, coherent set of instructional protocols and practices that, when adopted carefully, ensure that all the forces of cognitive and social engagement are aligned for high-level learning and critical thinking.

The Vancouver Island University Team-Based Learning Institute will take you through the process of transforming a traditionally taught course into a Team-Based Learning course. The August 2017 Institute is for instructors who will implement the Team-Based Learning approach beginning in Fall 2017.

A limited number of seats are available for guests (i.e., higher education teachers not currently on the faculty or teaching staff of Vancouver Island University). Guest fees are $375 (CAD) plus GST, which cover a two-day workshop (8:30 AM - 3:30 PM) including a light breakfast, lunch, consultations with veteran TBL practitioners, and a copy of Getting Started with Team-Based Learning (Sibley and Ostafichuk).
