Jessica, I've occasionally done as Brian suggested and used two teams of 3 or 4. It works fairly well. It's tough when your classes are so small. Another strategy, that I've used a time or two, is to have one team and then when they do applications present answer choices from previous (or make believe) teams for them to compare against/ discuss. Jacob Shin from MBA Link has started to teach GMAT and SAT test prep class with nine total students with small teams of three each. They send the lecture slides ahead of time and then do an IRAT, TRAT and instructor clarification in a face-to-face format. They have found it to be very effective. The workshop will be held at the Hilton San Francisco Airport Bayfront in San Francisco, California on Friday, December 9, 2016. The Regional Workshop traditionally hosts two workshops: TBL 101 and Creating an Effective TBL Module. Please see below for information on these workshops: *TBL 101* This is the single best introduction to TBL. It is conducted in a TBL format, participants must prepare ahead, take an IRAT, and engage actively with their assigned team members. The structure, process, and essential characteristics of an effective TBL module are emphasized. At the end of this workshop, the participants will be able to: - Describe the fundamental principles that foster active learning in small groups - Identify the key elements of TBL - Appreciate the value of "backward design" - Define the 4S approach to effective in-class applications - Identify barriers to implementation and strategize solutions *Creating an Effective TBL Module* This workshop is for educators who have completed the introductory workshop on Team-Based Learning(tm) - TBL 101. The entire workshop is conducted in a TBL format and there is an advance assignment. Participants will practice and develop skills for creating effective Team-Based Learning modules by participating in the following activities: - a clarification of the process and importance of readiness assurance - a differentiation of the levels and types of application exercise questions - an opportunity to practice writing objectives for an application exercise writing an application exercise and comparing and contrasting the application exercises of others This information as well as registration can be found here <http://www.cvent.com/d/jvqp9p>. Hi everyone! I am using TBL for the first time in a 60-person criminology theory course and am loving it! I am interested in using TBL for a graduate-level statistics course in the spring, but wonder how implementation will work due to the small class size. I expect about 5-6 students to enroll for the course. Do I just have one group? Any suggestions you have to offer are much appreciated!
