Good Morning, TBL colleagues,
I'm pleased to announce the May 2016 edition of the Vancouver Island Team-Based Learning Institute. This event is hosted by Vancouver Island University (VIU)'s Centre for Innovation and Excellence in Learning<https://ciel.viu.ca/>. While this Institute is conceived primarily for VIU faculty members, we are once again making available a handful of seats for non-VIU guests who are looking for this type of learning opportunity. If you know of colleagues at your campus seeking a structured cohort experience for learning TBL course design and delivery, we hope you'll share this information with them.

The price of the program is modestly set for "cost-recovery" only. If you are coming over the border from the US, there is the attractive "Loonie Discount," otherwise known as the current exchange rate with the Canadian dollar. Then there is the added bonus of guest participants having a legitimate "professional development" pretext to travel to "The Island<http://www.hellobc.com/vancouver-island.aspx>," one of the most picturesque regions of North America. We'd recommend that participants plan to bring their hiking boots, camera and binoculars, and spend a few extra days here before or after the Institute, in order to experience the geographical and cultural richness of this region<http://www.vancouverisland.travel/things-to-do/>.

A thematic overview of the TBL Institute can be seen in the promotional blurb below, used to recruit local faculty members. Additional guest-specific details of the agenda can be found on the application/registration page<https://survey.viu.ca/GuestTBLMay2016.survey>.

Let me know if you have questions. I'll be in Albuquerque for the conference this week, so look me up if you'd like to chat about this program.

Vancouver Island TBL Institute
More Rigor and More Fun with Team-Based Learning
May 17 and 19, 2016 in Nanaimo, BC, Canada<http://www.hellobc.com/nanaimo.aspx>

If your goal as teacher is to raise the intellectual bar for students, and foster in them greater independence of thinking, you might be ready to join the growing group of VIU faculty members now using Team-Based Learning.

Here is what VIU Teaching Faculty are saying about TBL:

  * "For the first time my students are consistently coming to class prepared."
  * "I couldn't believe how good the discussion was... students were using the theory and technical vocabulary just like experts!"
  * "I gave a midterm test similar to ones I've used in the past. Students in my TBL course scored 13% higher on average."
  * "The other day I went 20 minutes over the scheduled class time, and NO ONE said anything, they were THAT engaged!"
  * "I can tell, after just a few classes, I'm never going back to doing lectures. This is just too much fun, and I can see that my students are learning more."
  * "I used to hate teaching this course because the content was so dry. Now I'm enjoying it, and my students are really getting into it."
  * "My students tell me I'm like a new teacher. My whole outlook on teaching has changed!"

It doesn't matter which subject you teach or the size of your class. TBL has been used in large and small classes, in science and math, engineering, philosophy, literature, history, engineering, health and nursing, business, technology and trades. What makes it successful is its simple, clear protocols for "flipping" your course in a way that ensures student buy-in quickly. The model can be easily adapted to almost any teaching situation.

The Vancouver Island Team-Based Learning Institute is designed to take you through the process of transforming a traditionally taught course into a TBL course, or developing a new course from scratch using TBL. This event is geared for faculty members or instructors who will implement the TBL approach beginning in Summer or Fall 2016. For a brief introduction to TBL, please watch this short video: TBL: Group Work that Works<https://vimeo.com/51713733>.

The Institute is facilitated by Bill Roberson, Ph.D (Profile<https://ciel.viu.ca/bill-roberson>) and Tine Reimers, Ph.D. (Profile<https://ciel.viu.ca/tine-reimers>) both senior educational development specialists who have decades of experience working with faculty in teaching and learning centres. They are both veteran team-based learning educators and facilitators and are experienced at engaging faculty members in transformative changes in their teaching. They have worked closely with more than 300 successful new adopters of TBL. They have refined and streamlined the process by which new adopters learn to design, develop and manage their TBL courses.
