Dear Colleagues, I really like the resources Neal and Bill shared as they remind me of the power of engaging mindfully in note-taking. However, they aren't always tailored to note taking in my gen ed. TBL classroom within a university with a large low income, minority and first generation population. The NYT this weekend had a wonderful article that should make any TBL person's heart sing as it reflects on the social justice implications of the traditional verses flipped classroom http://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/13/opinion/sunday/are-college-lectures-unfair.html?ref=opinion&_r=0 <http://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/13/opinion/sunday/are-college-lectures-unfair.html?ref=opinion&_r=0> I ask my students to prepare notes from the text book or newspaper article for RATs. So a video or reading about note taking in class or from a PowerPoint is less useful for this particular audience. I emphasize the use of cited notes in preparing appeals and in preparing applications (team written). Also I don't give exams anymore :) As Dee suggests, tailoring directions for TBL for our youngest and sometimes less empowered and committed students may take a bit more work. I know I'm only just beginning to consider how to better align my TBL assumptions and expectations with my students skills. Guess that's the next step on the road. I liked the idea of engaging seniors in an introductory classroom, but as someone who teaches in a program with no majors (geography is a minor at my institution) its a lot harder to collect able seniors to help in the classroom, and they are often working several jobs and don't have a lot of time to devote to their minor. Guess that all fits with my plan for creating a geography major just before my final step in world domination :) Manda Dr. Amanda Rees Professor of Geography, Department of History and Geography Tel: (706) 507 8358 Fax: (706) 507-8362 E-mail: [log in to unmask] Web: <[log in to unmask]> http://columbusstate.academia.edu/AmandaRees *Coordinator* <http://history.columbusstate.edu/columbuscommunitygeography.php>*: Columbus Community Geography Center* <http://history.columbusstate.edu/columbuscommunitygeography.php> Mailing Address: Department of History and Geography, Columbus State University 4225 University Avenue, Columbus, GA 31907, U.S.A.
