Medical Education Faculty Position

 

The Department of Medical Education at Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine is seeking a faculty candidate who will work as part of an interdisciplinary team engaged in developing and implementing the curriculum and educational processes for a new medical school. Academic rank and salary are commensurate with experience.

 

The ideal candidate will have:

·         demonstrated competency in instructional technology, course design, and faculty development

·         demonstrated competency and track record of success in medical education research

·         experience in developing and overseeing student, course, and program assessment

·         experience working with medical students  and residents to enhance learning

·         experience developing iBooks in collaboration with content expert faculty members

·         vision, creativity, initiative, and flexibility to develop and facilitate educational initiatives

·         strong communication and presentation skills

 

Responsibilities will include:

·         Collaborate with biomedical and clinical faculty members on the design and implementation of medical curriculum primarily at the undergraduate level but also at the graduate level.

·         Integration of instructional technologies including instructional media development.

Design and implementation of faculty, resident, and student development programs, including assessment and remediation.

·         Collaborate on the design and implementation of educational research with biomedical and clinical faculty members leading to presentations and publications.

 

This position requires

·         Doctorate in a field related to education (PhD or EdD) such as higher education, instructional systems, educational technology, instructional design, or a related field.

·         Minimum of 3 years work experience in instructional technology or faculty development, preferably in a medical school.

·         Proficient with Windows and MacOS platforms.

 

The Department of Medical Education is an academic department that fosters and supports a large interdisciplinary community of faculty educators, residents, and students. The Department faculty work collaboratively with the Associate Deans, Department Chairs, Program Directors, and various committees on curriculum development and implementation.  Department initiatives include faculty development activities to enhance instructional design; curriculum development, measurement and assessment; instructional technology; educational scholarship; and academic portfolio development to strengthen educational skills for classroom, small group, and clinical teaching.

 

Offering the full continuum of undergraduate, graduate, and continuing medical education in Southwest Michigan, the inaugural class of medical students began in August 2014. The medical school has more than 200 residents and fellows in eight residency and two fellowship programs. Ninety-two employed faculty and more than 200 community physicians are involved in medical school teaching and research programs. WMed Clinics provide more than 58,000 outpatient visits annually in primary care and subspecialty clinics with a full range of on-site ancillary services. Opened in June 2014, the medical school's new 350,000 square foot educational building underwent a $68 million renovation and expansion including a 24,000 square foot simulation center. The medical school is a collaboration of Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo's two teaching hospitals, Borgess Health and Bronson Healthcare.
