Good Morning, TBL Colleagues,
It's that time again. Here at the Albany campus of the State University of New York we are gearing up for our next Instructional Leadership Academy (August 5&7, 2014), in which we work with a small cohort (15-20) of faculty members to implement TBL in the upcoming semester. Although this event is designed to serve primarily our local UAlbany faculty (see promo blurb at the bottom), for the past several years we have welcomed into each academy a few guests from other universities and colleges, who were seeking a structured opportunity to prepare a TBL course in the company of other enthusiasts. Again this year we are holding open a small number of seats for guests. The fee is modest (details can be found in the online registration page-see link), we include a copy of Larry Michaelsen's book in the deal, and lunch is provided both days. If you are interested in joining or know of colleagues looking for this kind of experience, please visit our guest registration page at provide the information requested, and our staff will follow up with you. https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/TBLGuestAugust2014

Instructional Leadership Academy Dates: August 5 & 7, 9:30am to 3:30pm, including substantial assignments before and between the two dates.

Good Morning, UAlbany Faculty Members,
As the fall semester approaches, so do the perennial challenges of university teaching, such as...

* Getting students to take more responsibility for their own learning

* Getting students to participate willingly and actively in class, without special rewards or coercion

* Inducing students to think and communicate at a higher level

* Ensuring that students prepare for class

* Getting more buy-in from students, so you're not the only source of energy and enthusiasm in the classroom

If these are the kinds of things you're trying to make happen in your courses this fall, we invite you to participate in the upcoming iteration of ITLAL's Instructional Leadership Academy: Turn Your Students into Independent, Self-Motivated Thinkers with Team-Based Learning. More than 200 UAlbany faculty members (and as many grad students who teach) now use key elements or the whole method of the Michaelsen TBL strategy. The principle? Design well and then get out of students' way while they figure things out! TBL is currently being used successfully at UAlbany in undergraduate and graduate courses, small and large classes, in areas as disparate as Computer Science, Public Health, Criminal Justice, Political Science, Math, Literature, Public Administration, Social Welfare, Information Literacy, History, Art, Physics, and Philosophy, to name just a few. This Instructional Leadership Academy will take you through the process of transforming a traditional course into a TBL course. More information on TBL can be found at www.teambasedlearning.org<http://www.teambasedlearning.org>.

Academy Dates: August 5 & 7, 9:30am to 3:30pm, including substantial assignments before and between the two dates.
Application Deadline: July 28, 2014. There are a limited number of seats for this Academy.
