I announce something like, "I've been notified by disability services that one or two class members (out of 80 or so) may need extra time for the individual RATs. I'll be here about 15 or 20 minutes early and ANYONE who thinks they would like a bit more time can come in and start the test early. That applies even if you don't have a note from disability services." Over the years I've only had a handful of students who took me up on the offer. Ironically, the one student who probably benefitted (herself and her team) the very most did not have disability services approval for extra test taking time.  She was really slow on her first RAT, realized that it made things more difficult for her team and chose to come early so it wouldn't happen again.

Last year, I had a student in my math class who needed the “wordy” questions read to him plus longer time to complete the weekly 15 MC iRAT. Since our class started directly after lunch, my solution was to get him to come to class early by 10-15 minutes. I gave him my iPhone with a voice memo containing my pre-reading of the questions and he simply brought his own headphones which also acted like ear plugs. He was always done at the same time as the other students and never missed any part of the class or announcements etc. Luckily, this fella was super honest so I had no iPhone issues and he liked being in that position of trust but I will use a voice recorder this year if I have other students with issues.

Subject: how to handle RAT's and special needs

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if any one has been in this situation before. I have a
special needs student who requires extra test time in a separate building
through disability services. I'm not sure how to work this with the
iRAT/tRAT because we go right into the team RAT after the individual RAT.
If this student is taking the iRAT individually and gets extended time,
she would miss the team RAT. Has anyone else been in this situation
before? How did you work it out? Thanks!
