Hi Sandra,
At University of Virginia SOM (150 students) and University of Illinois COM at Urbana-Champaign (120 students) teams remain the same throughout all classes in M1. This promotes team coherence and provides many opportunities to work together even while TBL is being implemented a few modules at a time in each course. Both schools change teams for M2.
UVA uses a "block" curriculum so teams stay the same as they move from block to block during the year. It is important to have consistent delivery of TBL in each block so students understand the expectations and process, and can focus on learning.
UICOM-UC uses overlapping discipline based courses, so teams are the same for each course (biochem, micro, etc). In addition to ensuring consistency, it's necessary to coordinate when TBLs are scheduled in each course so students have adequate time to prepare.
A central "TBL oversight" group is an effective way to manage TBL across courses.
All the best,

I'm asking this question from the context of a medical training university, that accepts 110 students every year.

Question:
When the diverse groups are formed in preparation for TBL, are these groups consistent for every class for the year? I can see the efficiency of this for both the students and instructors.

I look forward to the responses.
thanks
