We ran a 7-week summer course two years ago for undergad/post-bacs on the Pathological Continuum of Obesity to Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus while we were developing curriculum for our new med school.  There were 9 registrants, which we divided into two teams of 4 and 5. It worked out great!!  Haven't had time to offer it again, but we are planning to do so once things start to settle down around here.

One thing that we found worked particularly well with this small class was to have the two teams display complex solutions (for example, a concept map) and have each team present to the other then receive feedback from them.  Sort of a modified gallery walk with the benefit of having enough time to accomplish it effectively and completely.

I helped with a grad research methods TBL class that had 3 students (1
team)....we had hoped for 8....to get 2 teams

Not perfect but good questions and activities were still
useful...instructor many times found herself in devil's advocate
position...interrogating teams decision....kind of was socratic
dialogue...as much as TBL

Small was NOT perfect....but still better than lecturing :-)
