Hi Jenny:

Congratulations on starting TBL. I’m noticing looking at your TBL evaluation that most of what you are focusing on is TBL as a learning strategy. While in my experience TBL does promote enhanced performance, where I believe it has the most potential is in its ability to help students improve their interpersonal and communication skills, and also their attitudes about working with peers and working in teams.

On my evaluation of 3rd year medical students, one of the highest rated items is “the TBL activity seemed relevant to the attainment of interpersonal and communication skills”. You might also want, if you are introducing a peer evaluation strategy to ask about that. The item on my evaluation is “The peer evaluation helped me to give useful feedback to my fellow students”.

I would suggest adding at least one item about how your students feel about working in a team. Something like “The TBL approach gave me more confidence in the knowledge of my peers” or “The TBL approach improved my attitude about working in teams. “

You might be able to pare the survey down a little bit by taking out a few of the knowledge/performance items.

Good luck!

Subject: Draft evaluation questionnaire

Dear All

I shall be evaluating the first time we use TBL with our second year undergraduate students.  I’ve been looking at the evaluation research published and have put together the attached draft questionnaire.  If any of you have time to give me any feedback on this, I’d be most grateful.

Best wishes

Jenny
