Hi
I tell students to think about what workplace learning will be like
Look something up online, read a bit, lean over to the next cubicle....maybe get some clarification from near-peer.....maybe ask your boss next....the company expert....eventually the industry expert across town
the real theme here is you trying to understand as much as you can by yourself....then talking with near-peer (teammate)....then talking to boss or expert (whole class conversation)
trying to understand the importance of the increasingly sophisticated conversation to increase your understanding
BOTTOM LINE
TBL is like WORKPLACE LEARNING
####################
I have an instructor that has taught Construction Management for 6 years using TBL......after the first year....he now spends some time going over Bloom's Taxonomy.....so students have a framework to understand what he is trying to do
##################
Reminding students of your rationales
I think once a semester is NOT enough....keep reminding students why you do what you do

two best quotes of last few week
"student evaluations are about managing expectations"
"who ever does the work, does the learning"

Duane,
Let me ask for some additional information:
Dee
- How many people were in the class last fall?
- Of these, how many clearly did not buy into using TBL?

I just received end of semester student evaluations for fall 2010 semester. Some students did not “buy into” the TBL theory of teaching.
I did my best to explain the justification for using TBL during the first week of class.
More specifically, I used
1.) the process described in the attached document
First-Day Questions for the Learner-Centered Classroom
by Gary A. Smith (National Teaching and Learning Forum, Sept. 2008)
and
2.) the video from U. of Texas (http://magenta.cit.utexas.edu/largeclasses/#tbl) .
Still, some students think they should be lectured to every class and, also, think they are being short- changed by a professor that uses TBL.
I have interacted with Larry Michaelsen over the years and have watched the videos at
http://tblc.camp9.org/TBLVideos
Please advise me of things besides the above that will make students better “buy into” the TBL process.
Thanks in advance.
