Thanks Karla and Michael Sweet. I teach a junior/senior class in ‘food processing’ that involves principles (of a processing operation), its effects on food and example numerical problems to illustrate simple process parameters. I had been handing out home work problems to solve once a week.

I am teaching relatively small classes – 30-35 students. My students are freshmen and sophomores in different (micro, macro, trade) introductory classes.

Hi Jasminka,

What sort of class and student population are you working with?  Some find starting with the IRAT/ GRAT a good place to begin.  It would take some time on your part to work through the reading material that you’d like students to read and make questions that lead the students to some place you’d like them to go (i.e., something you’d like them to be able to know/ do when they’re done).  The other alternative would be to start with an application exercise (or a few).  It might be easier (and maybe less scary to students).  You could either choose to grade or choose not to grade them.  The idea would be to ask the students to apply the course material that you’d lectured over.  That’s why I asked about the kind of course/ student you’re working with.  Knowing that would make it easier to think about what you’d want to ask students to DO with your knowledge base.  Keep asking questions.  The TBL list is usually very helpful.  Good luck exploring TBL.  Karla
