Re: Inexpensive Scoring Machine Most of my students don’t have clickers (some first years students do)

And we didn’t find the PRS software was stable enough for general classroom use

My institution stopped using PRS in 20007....we now use iClickers.......

Clickers would certainly be  a option....but for multiple classes of 160 I need one $800 dollars scanner.....not the 160 x $40 per clicker x multiple classes (even though the students buy the clickers....we are talking big dollars)

If your students have clickers already....it makes sense to use them

Jim and others, re: paper scanners:

Am curious as to why scanners are being used rather than clickers?  Pros and cons?   We, for the first time last spring, used the  "homework" feature (i.e. students enter their RAT answers during class as an in-class homework) of the PRS Response clicker system, and it  works great, in a class of 50-students.  Instant grading by the computer, and a gradebook produced automatically in Excel format.   Also, no Departmental/teaching budget cost:  Students already have the clickers, because they are being used on campus in the larger general ed courses (like chemistry).
