Give some credit toward the final grade for class participation. I use enough to be the difference between an A and a B.

If someone is not present, without a valid excuse, then they get negative credit for the day. If they show up and do not participate, then they get zero credit for the day.

No single day is worth much, but this seems to make a difference in attendance.

Karla,

In the spirit of “students will work hard on whatever they are rewarded for”, we expect a product from most of the application exercises we do in Medical Physiology.  The product may be a preclass writing exercise that they can improve with the team discussion or it may be a preliminary set of answers to the questions that will be addressed in class.  We even have a case study on obesity where we ask the students to bring a concept map of the physiological impact of obesity.  Only those students in attendance may turn the product in to the instructor.  It seems to work pretty well for us.

Hi all,
I was wondering whether you grade the topic specific application exercises (i.e., the more narrowly focused, problem solving exercises that follow a single RAT)?  I have a class (a Friday afternoon class) that seems to see the RAT as the only thing that they need to be there for because it’s the thing that’s graded.  Thanks.  Karla Kubitz
