Members of the TBL listserv:
I have been noting with interest the recent discussions about the
reactions of some students to the grade weight setting exercise, and
especially the report that some students have strong feelings about the
weight they put on the peer evaluations.
This surprised me because I had never had this reaction in my class, and
I was trying to figure out why. Then I realized what I think is the
reason:
- I use peer evaluations as a "percentage multiplier" of the
total group score - i.e., NOT as a separate score to be added in.
- Therefore the grade weight setting exercise does not ask students to
put a weight on peer evaluations. They only put weights on the
individual scores and the graded group activities.
This might be a possible solution for those of you who have had
problems with this.
