Very heartening to hear all this as someone who is developing this for the first time and struggling with writing application activities!

Dear Robin,
Congratulations! That was highly valued praise indeed.
I had struggled with a large (150) and very diverse first year course for a couple of years before I tried TBL a couple of years ago following an excellent TBL workshop run by Jim Sibley in Adelaide. The first year I trialled a couple of sessions and was encouraged enough to expand last year. I recently received a teaching excellence award in my school, largely on the back of the increase in student evaluation scores (up to 20%) and the excellent feedback and results with TBL. I do plan to publish in the Journal of Veterinary Medical Education when I get time to write it up. Thanks to Jim Sibley and everybody else on the Listserve as I learn a lot from the conversations. I also wholeheartedly agree with Robin, I hadn't been teaching long enough to be jaded, but the use of TBL certainly increases my enjoyment of teaching as it puts so much energy back into the lecture theatre.

After 6 years of teaching a master's-level nurse practitioner course (average 75 students) using TBL, I received the following email yesterday from a male NP student "of a certain age" which was so confirming that TBL really applies evidence-based, best practices:

"I wanted to approach you today after the final exam to thank you for one of the most enjoyable and energizing experiences I have had in my higher education experience, but you were surrounded by students doing the same thing.
I have six earned degrees (including an EdD) and almost 700 semester hours. I have taught at all levels. I don't usually disclose that, but wanted you to know that I know from where I speak. You have, truly, mastered and applied the best practices for adult learning in your classroom. The experience was inspirational. Thank you for that."

Thanks to the TBL strategy, it is obvous to my students that the joy of teaching has been revived for me! So those of you new to TBL, please stay the course and follow the strategy as closely as you can because it's worth it.
