Some TeamLearning subscribers might be  be interested in a recent 
post "Re: The value of email discussion lists"  [Hake (2009)].  The 
abstract reads:

ABSTRACT: I list some of the advantages of email discussion lists as 
given in posts titled "The value of email discussion lists" by Gerald

NET-GOLD list. In addition, I enumerate some strengths of Academic 
Discussion Lists as given in "Over Two-Hundred Education & Science
