Hi Terri,

I do not assign homework before a RAT, but I have started using reading guides for the last two years. I did not use reading guides for a number of years because of the same concerns that you are expressing (concern that it would lead to students just skimming the chapter for the answers to the reading guides). What I decided was that part of what I was accomplishing in my class, which is a social science theory class, was to teach students HOW to read effectively, and so the reading questions were necessary to help them learn to identify the main ideas. I also use backward design to link the reading questions to the learning objectives. Some students still manage to receive low scores on their RATs every week, but overall, RAT scores have improved as well as students own sense of efficacy as learners.

I hope this is helpful.

Best,

Jane

    Hello,

I am currently redesigning my course using TBL. The course is very information-dense (anatomy & physiology) and most of the students are sophomores. I was planning to assign weekly online homework to help students keep on track with their reading. I am now wondering if that could backfire and lead to students just skimming the chapter for the answers to the homework. Does anyone have experience with this? Are weekly online homework assignments beneficial?

    Thanks!

    Terri
