TBL Group, 

I have a question about IRAT and TRAT grade distribution.  Over the last several years, we have allowed students to vote for their TBL distribution and for the most part students choose the highest percentage on the TRAT.  For example, over the years we have allowed students to vote for the following TBL grade distributions on IRATs and TRATs (70/30, 60/40, and 50/50).  Over the years students have always choose the 50/50 option.  

Recently faculty were concerned that students were passing the final course while failing the IRAT.   Some faculty are concerned that students fail the IRAT, but manage to pass the overall TBL activity because their TRAT is near 100%.  For example if a student gets 3/10 correct on the IRAT, and gets a 10/10 on the TRAT that student gets a 70% on the overall TBL activity.   I am curious what other schools do with IRAT and TRAT grade distribution?  Some faculty would like to set a "threshold" score for students to achieve on their IRAT score in order to receive their TRAT score, for example students will need to get at least a 60% on their IRAT in order to get their group's TRAT score.  Others want to make the IRAT worth 70% and the TRAT worth 30% to deemphasis the team score.  Some have even suggested 80% IRAT and 20% TRAT.    

In terms of understanding the entire picture, our courses might have three (3) graded activities: an exam worth (85%), a quiz worth (10%), a TBL worth 5% of which the TBL score consist of 50% of their IRAT and 50% of their TRAT score.  In addition, our mean scores on IRATs ranges from 60 to 80% depending on the difficulty of the TBL.
