Hi,

Sounds like research by Michelene Chi out of the University of 
Pittsburgh who also found 10-year-old chess players had better memory 
for chess boards (but not other areas) than adults who were not chess 
players.

If you need a more specific reference, I can look it up for you.  Let 
me know.
