While I won't have repeating students, I included questions on my final exam that came directly from previous RATs and application activities. Most didn't remember them. They ended up reasoning them through like all questions. I was astonished - even after I included some of the questions in a Team Jeopardy game to help them study for the final exam - something I have never done with grad students in the past. Therefore, I suspect if the students failed, they likely did not retain the material. Repeating should help the repeaters, and the Teams should function as usual. I should add that I am new to TBL, and so I am not speaking as an expert TBLer - just someone who has taught for some time (although I would never say an expert!) I am so pleased with my first TBL class this semester. While the course grades are consistent with prior years (I thought they might go up) the students were definitely so much more engaged, achieved higher levels of critical thinking, and I believe will remember the material better after the course is over. At least I hope so, despite their not being able to remember exact questions from before! I was fascinating to hear them process the questions in their teams. It also showed me clearly when my questions were flawed. I would hear that they knew the material well, but my far from ideal question was confusing them. Oh well - I definitely have to write better questions, something that I did not do a lot of in the past. Thanks, Michael, for posting this question, and for the others who responded.
