Here's two articles of possible interest to TBLers:
"Likes attract: Students self-sort in a classroom by gender, demography,
and academic characteristics," Freeman et al., Active Learning in Higher
Education, http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/1469787417707614 .
It shows that when allowed, students self-select into groups like
themselves. It would seem to suggest that the TBL method of instructor
formed groups is sound. Many of the authors of this paper were involved
with the well know metastudy on active learning that appeared in the
Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences:
http://www.pnas.org/content/111/23/8410.abstract .
"Golden age for team players,"
https://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2017/10/social-skills-increasingly-valuable-to-employers-harvard-economist-finds/
This article describes a forthcoming publication in the Quarterly
Journal of Economics that finds that teamwork is increasingly valuable
in the workplace. The QJE is considered a top 5 journal in my
discipline; the last time I checked with had more than 1,000
peer-reviewed journals.
