Hi everyone,

I’d like to share with you my newly updated updated ebook – “Team-based
Learning: A guide to Success <https://bit.ly/3Wh7Mt6>”.

Team-based learning (TBL) has been proven to be an effective approach to
nurturing collaboration skills and self-development via a process of
individual and teamwork. However, there can be unique challenges in TBL
implementation such as maintaining student continuous engagement,
accountability, and sufficient feedback throughout the learning process.

Hi all, I am currently doing a PhD at the University of Bradford, exploring whether Team-Based Learning is inclusive for autistic learners. The research starts off by capturing the experiences of TBL for autistic students in university (or those who have just left) and this will then feed into whether TBL can be used to promote inclusion in secondary schools. It’s very exciting!

Hello there,

I’m a faculty developer at a small college in British Columbia. I have been approached by instructors who wish to integrate tRAT testing in their online/Hyflex courses. I’m wondering if folks have recommendations for a free or inexpensive online quizzing tools that mimics the tRAT scratch cards. That would mean it allows students to choose multiple answers/question to get to the correct one with the possibility of earning descending, partial marks for doing so.

I am working on a new research project that touches on several different areas – TBL, active learning, value of working with others, critical thinking skills, thus a vast body of previous literature. I would appreciate if those in the TBL world would share what they think might be relevant peer reviewed publications in case I might be overlooking important references. I am most interested in more recent publications, maybe 2016 to present.

Greetings from the Team Based Learning Collaborative,
We are seeking a story or two in our next newsletter that will come out in early March. Have you used TBLC to transform a course, a training session or in other settings that you would like to share with our readers? We would love to hear about it. We are open to stories about overcoming challenges, challenging the status quo, or other unique situations where TBL helped you or your program.
If you are willing to contribute, please let me know and I can give you the instructions on the format and length of the article.

Hello all,

I will be using TBL in one of my classes for the first time this quarter.
The class is an in-person 200 level environmental geography class. There
will be four modules with a RAT at the start of each; students will also
take the final using the same format (individually first, then in teams).

Dear TBL Colleagues,

I am posting these opportunities to the Team-Based Learning list, because they are in a faculty where TBL is employed, and which is seeking to recruit professors who will be excellent, innovative educators, so I naturally thought of this group. 😊 The University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences is currently advertising for two tenure-track educational leadership faculty positions at UBC’s Point Grey campus in Vancouver BC. Please follow the official links below for more information about the positions, and how to apply. And please feel free to forward this to others who may be interested. Also please note that the application deadline of 31 December 2023 is approaching rapidly.

Hi all,

I got a question from a teacher. He was wondering if he could send the application exercise (in our field, it is a 2 pages clinical problem) to the students before the TBL session.

The reason he asked if that he found that students are spending to much time reading the clinical scenario during the TBL session; he thought that if students have already done the reading of the clinical scenario at home, they will have more time to focus on the questions of this appplication exercise in class and more time for discussion in class.

With a class of 4 students we are questioning whether 2 teams of two would be recommended. Currently we have one team and we use ghost team responses to team exercises for the students to consider but not much discussion occurs without another real team to discuss with. Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

Hi, Mark. I have exactly the same problem, and am just now contemplating what to do.

The problem is in fact twofold, as I see it.

First, even the smallest bundles they sell -- packs of a thousand cards -- is way too many for most of us. It would take me several years to use up an entire pack. Even if you do six or seven TRATs in a single course, you will have that many students on each team, so you won't use up all the cards in a pack until you've taught a thousand students. For most people in my department, that would take several years.

Hi all!

How much time do you estimate for the Pre-class preparation phase of TBL
(before an in-class 3h TBL session)?

I of course understand that it depends of the objectives for that session. However, I am wondering if there is literature showing how much time is optimal (considering that too many objectives is not a good idea).

Some of you might find this article interesting:

Buhl-Wiggers, J., la Cour, L. & Kjærgaard, A.L. Insights from a randomized
controlled trial of flipped classroom on academic achievement: the
challenge of student resistance. *Int J Educ Technol High Educ* 20, 41
(2023). https://doi.org/10.1186/s41239-023-00413-6 <#>
I wrote a short response to it on my blog:
https://activelylearning2teach.blogspot.com/2023/08/flipped-classroom-effectiveness.html

Basically, it seems to me, as many of you already know, that many of the
issues that instructors face with active learning such as flipping the
classroom are addressed by Team-Based Learning. Our fellow educators just
need to drink the Kool-Aid and come to this realization. Sometimes it
really feels to me like instructors just need to jump into the deep end of
the swimming pool to see the light.

Hi there,

The TBL Collaborative is once again asking for submissions to its upcoming August newsletter for stories about how you and/or your team successfully implemented TBL in your classroom or training. We are particular interested in stories that highlight some struggles (if you had any) and successful outcomes. This is a general interest story, so we do not need nor expect data. Hi TBL'ers,

Our institution is using TBL across several courses in the Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum, including courses that occur simultaneously within a given semester. Our approach has been to use the same teams for all courses using TBL in a given semester, rather than having different teams for different courses within the same semester. I'm curious how other institutions are operationalizing peer evaluations in this circumstance? Do you have peer evaluations for each course? Or do you have a central process so that the peer evaluations span all the TBL courses in a given semester? How does this influence grading in your courses? Thanks in advance for ideas & experiences you can share!

Hi all,

I am teaching nephrology with TBL x 2013.
I have been ask to explain what is TBL to a group of teachers.

I therefore would like to prepare a lesson about TBL, using the TBL method for that lesson.
I have ideas for IRAT and TRAT.

However, for the application exercices, I am not sure what to do.
For that part, I don't have enough time to ask them to prepare a TBL lesson or to ask them to teach a TBL lesson that is already prepared.
Any other suggestion for the application exercices?

Hi all,

I'm looking for a resource that presents themes from instructors'
experiences transitioning to TBL. For example:

- Why do instructors want to transition to TBL in the 1st place?
- What benefits/challenges did they experience?
- What big picture lessons did they learn in the process?

I'm thinking of using it in an upcoming "Intro to TBL" session that I'm

My name is Diana Langworthy, I'm a member of the TBLC and currently

I'd like to share a new resource that I've launched since the March 2023

resource for health professions learners and practitioners to enhance
evidence critique skills. It is called "What's it Worth? A Journal Club
Podcast".
<https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/whats-it-worth-a-journal-club-podcast/id1685481034>
Each episode is 30-45m long, covers a wide range of clinical areas, and,
depending on your teaching or precepting needs, could be used as a learning
resource or even as a component of pre-work for our in class TBLs (I know I
plan to use it for my Evidence Based Practice course this coming Fall for
our TBLs)!

Team-based learning (TBL) has been proven to be an effective approach to
nurture collaboration skills and self development via a process of
individual and team work. With the rise of AI, TBL is increasingly in
demand as an alternative approach to ensure academic integrity. However,
there can be unique challenges in TBL implementation such as maintaining
student continuous engagement, accountability, and sufficient feedback
throughout the learning process.

Hi all,

I’m looking for some peer evaluation guidance.

I use peer evaluations to adjust students’ averages across the team

the ratio of the student’s average peer evaluation score and the team’s
average peer evaluation score is multiplied against their average across
the team quizzes.

I have a new article published in the International Review of Economics Education: “Variation in individual engagement in team-based learning and final exam performance” available free at https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1477388022000184?dgcid=author – until November 3rd.

Abstract
I analyze the relationship between individual contributions within a team in a team-based learning environment and performance on the final exam in three different economics courses over thirteen years. All students are assigned to teams but vary in their degree of engagement or effort in the learning activities in the classroom. Controlling for both general and course-specific academic ability, I document individual learning gains, as reflected in final exam scores, associated with higher levels of engagement in team activities, as reflected in peer evaluations. A one standard deviation increase in an individual’s average peer evaluation above the mean correlates with a 2 to 3 percentage point higher final exam score, a result that generally holds for all class levels, grade point averages, and by gender.

Hello everyone!
At the beginning of the semester, when I present TBL to my students (second year of a bachelor course in Chemistry), I use a group activity to show them how powerful and engaging is working in teams and how different the point of view of the single student is, if compared to a team. This activity, though, is not structured as a TBL module.
I'm looking for some material which could be useful for any subject (that is, not related in particular to chemistry or science), structured as a TBL module (i-RAT and t-RAT, at least one t-APP), to assign to student in order to show them how TBL works.

Hi folks!

For some reason, I had it in my head that the tRAT should always be open book, for the simple fact that it encourages students to bring their books and to take good notes. For the quieter student who is well-prepared but may be shy to speak up during the tRAT, they have something to back up their position. It also helps with appeals. Now I can’t seem to find any reference to this in the major sources.

The learntbl.ca site mentions this. The admonition featured prominently in a team-based learning webinar on teaching online a couple years ago.

I find this plausible and use teams of four in my online classes.

We are now accepting requests to participate in the August 2022 Vancouver Island Team-Based Learning Institute, which will take place in Nanaimo, BC<https://wordpress.viu.ca/ciel/traveling-to-nanaimo-bc/>, on August 9-10-11. This is a "soup-to-nuts" course design project, in a beautiful setting, facilitated by three veteran TBL users and teachers (Bill Roberson and Tine Reimers of VIU and Jim Sibley of UBC). The fee is modest (375 CAD) and includes the three day event, meals during the workshops, and a free copy of Getting Started with Team-Based Learning by Jim Sibley et. al.
We invite participants to join us for the program, then chill on Vancouver Island for a few days. Kayaking, Hiking, Camping, Whale Watching, Wine/Beer Tasting, Summer Concerts and Locavore Dining are all part of the Island summer experience.

Dear Team Learning Readers,

I would like to invite you to join a live presentation –  “Let’s talk Team-Based Learning” at inspirED 2022 Virtual Conference on May 24th and 25th.

We are excited to have Dr. Michelle Steinhilb, Associate Professor and Marnie Roestel, Associate Director of Learning System Support at Central Michigan University as the speakers.

During this session, you will learn about how pedagogical technology was adopted to facilitate the TBL process and group assessment in a Biology course of 200 undergraduates. Furthermore, Michelle and Marnie will elaborate on the challenges in a hybrid course setup, their solutions, and students’ responses by the end of the course.

This presentation is one of many sessions at inspirED 2022, focusing on topics such as assessment, collaborative learning, and skill-based learning.

The entire event is free and attendees will receive a certificate as proof of contribution. You can register for free here.

If you have any questions about the conference, you can contact me at [log in to unmask]

Dear Team Learning Readers,

Too many scholars wait until the last minute to begin working on their
grant proposal instead of smartly laying the groundwork in advance. Lotte
Jaspers, Founding Partner and Director at Yellow Research and an expert
evaluator for the European Commission, and Dr. Julie Cwikla, Professor
and Director
for the Center for STEM Education, grant proposal developer, writer, and
reviewer, have helped scholars receive hundreds of millions of dollars in
funding from the ERC, NIH, NSF, and more.

Hi

I am retiring next year and will be looking to hand-off my TBL website (learntbl.ca) to someone.

I want to ensure the information stays freely available.

If you have any ideas of where I could find a new home for it….let me know.

We know that many of our colleagues are reluctant to even try Team-based Learning because they say it's too different from the way they like to teach. And yet, the ability to work in teams is the #1 skill that employers are looking for in their new hires.
As some of you know, my colleague Tim Franz and I have presented at the TBLC conference on using team projects and application exercises as a way to introduce your colleagues to move to using Team-based Learning.
This week Tim and I are offering free copies of our kindle book Making Team Projects Work: A Resource for High School and College Educators and a free preview of our companion student guide to make it even easier to incorporate teamwork into classes.
Please feel free to share this message and the attached flyer to any educators you think may be interested in reviewing this work.
Thank you.

So I experimented with the Mini TBL process where in a single class period
students complete a short iRAT, T-RAT, any appeals, I review every
question. Then they do an application exercise. The first one went ok. I
just forgot to give them a 15 min time limit on the application exercise
and one team spent way too much time researching their answer.

Hello everyone,

My husband John Dyck, included here, redesigned a new course using TBL methodology and the first class and first 4S activity went really well. We have both developed classes using TBL and always feel stumped in the beginning to develop some solid 4S activities. Thus, we are reaching out for ideas.
1. Is there anyone doing a service learning and civic engagement course that has some good 4s activities they would be willing to share?
2. Beyond content specific, what 4s activities work really well that you would share to spur our creativity and ensure they are significant for the students?

Dear TBL Colleagues,
The Vancouver Island Team-Based Learning Institute is back! We’re pleased to let you know that we are picking up where we left off when we were so abruptly interrupted in 2020.
If you are aware of colleagues at your institution who are looking for an experiential opportunity to learn TBL, and who would thrive in doing so while working collaboratively with other faculty members, we invite you to share this announcement with them. Fees are modest, set for cost recovery only. Our one goal is the promotion of transformative TBL practices.
What: 2022 Vancouver Island Team-Based Learning Institute<https://wordpress.viu.ca/ciel/2022/04/12/2022-vancouver-island-team-based-learning-institute-august-9-10-11/>. (The TBL Institute is a small format gathering, providing a hands-on learning experience for faculty wishing to adopt the TBL Model as presented by Michaelsen, Knight and Fink in Team-Based Learning: A Transformative Use of Small Groups)

Imagine a classroom where…students always come prepared because they know that their contributions during in-class assignments will be consequential. They know they’ll be expected to participate, and they know their peers will be there to work with them. They look forward to class because they own the learning objectives and process.
Tine Reimers and Bill Roberson of Vancouver Island University, and Jim Sibley of University of British Columbia will be your hosts and facilitators for the 2022 Vancouver Island Team-Based Learning Institute.

Hello there,

I've been a lurker on the list-serv for many years. I've been.....let's say.....flirting with TBL for just as long.

My current challenge related to TBL, is creating application exercises for my intro level accounting course. This has been harder than I expected.

Are there any accounting instructors out there who resonate with this? I am looking for someone to team up with to crack this.

I will repeat this exercise in the spring with my introductory level microeconomics course, and plan to do this for at least two years to get enough observations. Has anyone conducted a study of TBL versus (active) lecture courses taught by the same instructor during the same semester? Not comparing parts of a course, but entire course TBL versus entire course more traditional lecture interspersed with activities done individually (or with others but not in organized teams). Besides academic performance in the class, what other instruments have been used to measure TBL versus lecture differences?

Just checking but do you give additional points for appeals. I had a team
that only missed one question but they wanted to appeal two other items
that they weren't crazy about the wording on even though they had answered
those items correctly on their first try. Since this whole endeavor is
about learning I'm inclined to give them their perfect score for submitting
two good appeals.

Dear Team Learning Readers,

Traditionally, leading publishers have favored publishing books written by
established academics in top universities. While much of this seminal
research is critically important in laying the foundations in many fields,
oftentimes potentially groundbreaking research from smaller universities or
from underrepresented populations hasn’t been afforded the same opportunity

Happy New Year and greetings everyone from England!

I was wondering if someone has adapted TBL to sociology and specifically the construction of childhood? I have some ideas for an application activity but I would be really grateful to hear from anyone who has already done this.

Many thanks,
Anna

Dear Team Learning Readers,

With journal submissions on a steep rise since the outset of the Covid-19
pandemic, publishers are feeling intense pressure to manage the record
level of article submissions, while continuing to preserve their high
standards. At the same time, they must ensure this research is disseminated
quickly so that it can reach the hands of decision-makers so they can
determine policy.

Hi TBLers

I plan to give a workshop on team-based learning, aimed at faculty who have
never seen it before. I hope to do a quick demo and do a little selling.
The best way to introduce TBL is to use TBL, so I would like the workshop
attendees to do a reading prep and then go through the TBL process.

Dear TBLer,

Teaching with a team-based learning methodology can be a daunting task for
any educator, especially with the switch to remote learning which has made
it harder for educators to replicate team-based learning effectively
online. Educators are using multiple tools to facilitate a TBL session,
making it challenging for them and their students. Is there an alternative?

Hello TBL folks,

I am looking for colleagues who are using (or have used) TBL in their History classrooms (or perhaps Humanities more broadly) in a post-secondary context, especially in Canada. I am thinking about coordinating a panel for the Canadian Historical Association annual meeting, which will be held online again in 2022 (May 16-18).

Good morning everyone,

I was wondering if anyone has delivered a TBL session on giving/receiving feedback and, if so, would you mind sharing your resources?

Many thanks,
Anna

Dear TBL fellas,
Thanks Brian for highlight the challenges of the scratch cards. It is indeed a set back.
Adding to Brian's suggestion, you can also use LAMS, the free and open source learning design web application that supports the entire TBL process (sync, async and/or remote) along with a dozens of other teaching strategies.
For background:
  • Need help onboarding?
    • Use the Teacher's Guide to get started. Do you want to use and customise it to the needs of your faculty? You are free to get any of the teaching resources and customise them to your needs.
    • Need help creating your first TBL lesson, use the TBL Design Wizard.
    • But all of my questions I have in my institution' LMS, do I need to retype them again!?  You can export them from your LMS and import them directly in LAMS (see IMS QTI). Or export them to Word and import them directly with formatting, images, etc.
    • Help with Students? check out the 5 minutes student's guide

  • Need analytics? Sure
  • Have ideas to improve TBL or better adapt it to your needs? Talk to us, we enjoy adding features you need. Recently we implemented very cool new features suggested by TBLC members
    • Whiteboards for AEs in TBL (Anne Marie O'Brien)
    • Rubrics for Self and Peer Evaluation (Beck McCarter)
    • Use code syntax for computer science answers for RATs and AEs (Comac McClean)
    • Improvements in TBL reporting (Marina Di Carro)
    • Improvements in students' collaboration during Gallery walks (Beck McCarter)
    • Discussion sentiment for TBL AEs and burning questions (Lishan Yang and Siew Ping Han)
    • Tolerance of SPA and SAPA factors (Chip Chian Neo)
  • Do you want to do research with us? We do research and publish papers on TBL and other pedagogies
  • Can I see some TBL modules in LAMS? Check out some of the most popular TBLC modules that you can play as a student now.
  • So who else uses LAMS for TBL? Here's a short list of people that we know. However as LAMS is open source, it is unlikely to know all the institutions that use it.
If you would like to learn more:
Try the LAMS demo. You get your own course and some student users that you can customise and play with. Need more students? let me know
Can I use LAMS with my institution LMS? Sure, we have native integrations with Blackboard and Moodle and all other LMS can use the IMS LTI (that includes Canvas, D2L, Elentra or any of these)
OK, how can I get LAMS for my institution?
Two ways:
1) LAMS is free and open source software. If your university has an IT department, they are able to build LAMS and customise it to their data privacy and technology requirements. As the code and Intellectual Property for LAMS is owned by the LAMS Foundation, it will always remain free and open source.
2) If you don't have an IT department or your IT department doesn't want to administer yet another eLearning platform, LAMS has a commercial company that offers LAMS as a service for educational institutions. We offer LAMS worldwide and comply with US Ferpa, UK GDPR, EU GDPR, SG PDPA, Australia's Privacy Act, etc. As part of the service support and training is also included.
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Thank you,
Chelsea
